Abstract

Pacemakers are meant to stabilise the heart rhythm and thus restore effective circulation and normal haemodynamics. In the course of an update, Medtronic's leadless pacemaker Micra™ Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS) was reevaluated. Leadless pacemakers are miniaturised pacemakers designed to perform the same functions as conventional devices, but can be implanted entirely in the right ventricle. This is expected to have the advantage of avoiding complications associated with the external generator in a subcutaneous skin pocket and the transvenous leads for pulse transmission, which are required with conventional pacemakers. A total of 16 new relevant documents (on 2,976 individuals) could be included on three ongoing prospective multicentre single arm studies, one multicenter case-control study and five additional small monocentre case series. The evidence for the evaluation of efficacy (compared to conventional pacemakers) was again considered insufficient, but with regard to safety the Micra™ TPS seems to have certain advantages.
