According to international studies, one in four children grows up with a parent with a mental illness for a short or long period of time. These children have an increased risk of developing (mental) health problems themselves or suffering disadvantages later in life. This is also associated with extensive social costs. There are few thoroughly evaluated preventative programmes in Austria. The "Village Programme", a participatory screening and support service developed as part of a research-practice partnership, showed promising results in the pilot phase. More public investment in early detection and early support and further research are needed.
