Hospital-based Health Technology Assessment for AI-based Digital Health Technologies

Needs Exploration, Prioritization and Rapid Exploration Reports

Duration: Q2 to Q4 2026
Language: English (with German summary)

This project develops practical approaches for hospital-based Health Technology Assessment (HB-HTA) processes to evaluate AI-based digital health technologies (AI-DHTs) in Austrian. Its aim is to support hospitals in prioritising and procuring these increasingly complex technologies and to facilitate decision-making on a structured and transparent basis.

In collaboration with hospital decision-makers, existing procurement processes and organisational needs will be analysed. Building on these findings, tools for the rapid initial assessment and prioritisation of AI-DHTs will be developed. These tools will be piloted through the preparation of Rapid Exploration Reports (RERs) for selected technologies and evaluated for their practical applicability. The project outcomes are intended to provide hospitals with a clear and transparent assessment pathway for the introduction of AI-DHTs in the future.

Over recent years, AIHTA has developed extensive methodological foundations for assessing the benefits of AI-DHTs in inpatient care settings and continues to support hospitals and hospital operators in conducting evidence-based evaluations of their clinical value.
